Defining World Cinema

The term ‘World Cinema’ gained much traction in the academic circles in the last two decades or so, dislocating such terms as ‘global cinema’ and Third Cinema. This session tries to come to offer its definition, by comparing it to ‘world literature’ and ‘world music’ and assess the power struggle between the centre and periphery in film production, which the term exhibits (and hides). It also compares it to Third Cinema and assesses the role of festivals in ensuring its niche success.
